Thousands took to the streets of Minsk on Sunday, as a part of an opposition "March of democracy," while hundreds were reportedly detained throughout the country.

Security service members were seen carrying batons while chasing protester and taking them to their vehicles.

During the demonstration, several metro stations were closed as riot police were seen setting up cordons in the capital’s street.

According to the Vesna unregistered human rights centre, over 500 people were arrested by security forces on Sunday, in several Belarusian cities.

Meanwhile, the Official Representative of Minsk Executive Committee's police department announced that about ten people were detained due to their participation in the unauthorised rally.

According to media reports, among those arrested were Olympic silver medalist Andrei Kravchenko, Miss Belarus 2008 Olga Khizhinkova, and kickboxing champion Ivan Ganin as well as several journalists from Russian and Belarusian news agencies.

Alongside opposition rallies, supporters of the Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko gathered in several cities across the country.

Belarus has been swept by anti-government protests following the disputed presidential election that saw long-time leader Lukashenko re-elected for a sixth term.
