Description

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell said the evictions of Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah are "illegal under international law," during a press conference in Brussels on Monday.

"The situation with regard to evictions of Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah and other areas of East Jerusalem is a matter of serious concern," said Borrell. "Such actions are illegal under international humanitarian law and only serve to fuel tensions on the ground."

"We are deeply concerned about the recent clashes and violence including again this morning in and around the Haram al-Sharif and the Temple Mount," the EU foreign policy chief said.

An Israeli district court ruled that several Palestinian families were to be evicted from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah, on the basis that Jews had owned the land on which they had been built prior to 1948. The veracity of the documents used to demonstrate these claims is contested by lawyers representing Palestinian residents.

The Israeli Supreme Court has delayed a hearing scheduled for Monday regarding the potential eviction of Palestinian families amid clashes, with a decision to withhold all scheduled evictions currently being in place as the process continues to unfold.
