The Eiffel Tower was illuminated with a spectacular laser show for the Opening Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Friday, despite huge downpours affecting the main event.
Footage shows the Eiffel Tower sparkling as lasers were projected into the night sky. Spectators, many holding umbrellas, are seen at the Trocadero venue watching the display.
The Opening Ceremony featured teams of athletes parading down the river, as well as dancing and performances along the banks.
As well as the downpours, it was marred by religious controversy over the apparent recreation of Leonardo da Vinci's 'Last Supper' with dancers and drag queens - as well as an upside down Olympic flag and the introduction of South Korea's athletes as the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea (DPRK).
Earlier, chaos also hit the railway network across France, which the authorities blamed on 'malicious' arson attacks.
