During a press conference on Friday, White House spokesperson Jake Sullivan told journalists that the United States and its allies would 'never recognise' the referenda on accession into the Russian Federation which were held in DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye.

"The United States will never recognise these actions, the world will never recognise these actions, and we will stay the course as the President told you earlier today,” Sullivan said. “We have built, led, and maintained an extraordinary and coordinated response with our allies and partners and that response will continue. As president Biden said, we will not be deterred."

Sullivan then went on to reiterate President Biden's statement that the US would 'defend every inch of NATO territory'.

"We are standing on a level with enhanced force posture across the Eastern flank in the major maritime domains and with all the capabilities we need in the air as well. We feel that we have in place right now, the capacity to effectively deter and respond to any contingency and to make good on what president Biden emphatically reinforced today, we will defend every inch of NATO territory," the spokesperson said.
