Description

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen delivered a speech on Monday inn Taipei, on the occasion of the National day of Taiwan.

During the speech, she vowed to boost the island's combat capability and improve its defences at a time when tensions with China have risen dramatically.

Tsai added that there was no room for compromise when it comes to preserving “our sovereignty and our democratic lifestyle.” She also stressed the importance of attaining “peace and stability,” particularly regarding Chinese “increasing military intimidation, diplomatic repression, trade obstruction, and attempts to undermine the sovereignty” of the island.

Beijing considers Taiwan sovereign Chinese territory, and the region is experiencing increasingly military and political pressure, particularly after the visit by United States House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taipei.
