Description

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke at a press conference on the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly on Saturday.

During the event, the diplomat said that the United States and other NATO countries had withdrawn troops from Afghanistan without "any consideration of the consequences". He clarified that the consequences were referring to the weapons left in the territory.

"Apparently, we all need to make sure these weapons are not used for unconstructive purposes," he said.

The minister also responded to a question about the mutually acceptable option of prisoner exchange between Russia and the US, the countries have not yet found an agreement on this matter.

"So far we have not come to any option. The Americans are only interested in taking their citizens and are not very serious about our wishes," Lavrov said.

During the press conference, Lavrov said that Russia would not interfere in the creation of an Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States (AUKUS) alliance, but that this format "may cause interest in the European Union to cooperate" with Russia, "using the obvious geopolitical and geostrategic advantages of being on one huge continent."

Earlier Sergei Lavrov arrived in New York City. According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, the Russian delegation was also joined by the Russian ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov and Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya.

The Russian foreign minister already managed to meet with several world politicians, including NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad, British Foreign Minister Elizabeth Truss, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, and Security Policy Josep Borrell on the UN General Assembly sidelines.
