US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called for a ceasefire between the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) and the Libyan National Army (LNA), as he welcomed the agreement between the two parties to re-enter talks. The remarks were made during a press conference held in Washington D.C. on Wednesday.
"The agreement between the GNA and the LNA to re-enter UN security talks was a good first step, very positive. Quick and good faith negotiations are now required to implement a ceasefire and relaunch the UN-led intra-Libyan political talks," said Pompeo.
"It’s time. It’s time for all Libyans on all sides to act, so that neither Russia nor any other country can interfere in Libya’s sovereignty for its own gain," he added.
During the press conference, the Secretary of State took the chance to slam the Chinese Communist Party, accusing it of " state-sponsored repression against all religions" and denouncing mass detentions of Uighurs, and repression of Tibetans, Buddhists and Christians, to list some religious groups.
In addition to Libya and China, Pompeo expressed his happiness regarding the recent release of US veteran Michael White by the Iranian government, and exhorted them to do they same with fellow American citizens Baquer Namazi, Siamak Namazi, and Morad Tahbaz.
