Description

Church bells rung across France on Wednesday as the nation's cathedrals and basilicas tolled in commemoration of the Notre Dame fire.

The first lady Brigitte Macron attended a special service at the Saint-Sulpice Catholic Church, the second largest house of worship in Paris, as the annual blessing of the oils for Holy Week took place ahead of Easter Sunday.

Crowds gathered outside to watch the ceremony on the big screen, as the bells rang for more than five minutes as a choir sung.

Church bells also rang in Strasbourg in the east and Rouen in the west of France two days after fire ravaged Notre Dame of Paris, the Gothic cathedral widely regarded as the soul of France.
