"The whole nation and the world rose up. He went down in hate, we're rising in love. He went down in injustice, we're rising up for justice. George Floyd died in discrimination, but the world now rises in equality," said Black Lives Matter spokesperson Ashton P Woods outside the church.
Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo was also at the scene, where he asked people calling for police defunding to reconsider their demands as this would ultimately hurt minorities in the community.
"People don't want us to go away. What they want is not less police, they want good police," added Acevedo at the service where family, friends and public personalities were also in attendance.
George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American man, was killed as he was being arrested in Minneapolis on May 25, after police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes despite Floyd saying he couldn't breathe.
The four officers charged in Floyd's death have since been fired and charged.
Protests sparked by Floyd's death have been taking place across the US and around the world for the second consecutive week.
