All forces of the German state are providing aid to the areas affected by the recent flooding in Western Germany, a government spokesperson told the press in Berlin on Friday.

"You can trust that all the forces of our state, federal, state and local, will do everything they can to save lives, avert danger and alleviate hardship, even under the most difficult conditions," spokesperson Martina Fietz said in the press conference.

"The government is confident that the good and effective structures of disaster relief in the states and municipalities will continue to be successful," Fietz added.

The spokesperson also said that Chancellor Angela Merkel and the entire Federal Government "would like to thank all the helpers, as well as police officers, authorities, the Federal Armed Forces and rescue services, the technical aid workers and volunteers, for their endless efforts in the affected areas."

At least 133 people were killed, and more than 1,000 have gone missing after flash floods hit parts of western Germany, while tens of thousands have been left without electricity. Flooding has also affected Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.
