Description

IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi was seen on Thursday visiting the site where Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was reportedly killed in Rafah, southern Gaza, the previous day

"This man planned, initiated, gave orders, and executed, and I assume that if we had left him alive, he would have continued to do so in the future," he claimed. "We are settling score with Sinwar, who was responsible for that very difficult day (October 7, 2023 attack) a year ago."

The location and date of the footage released by the Israeli army have not been independently verified.

Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed Sinwar had been 'eliminated' but said that 'the war in Gaza is not over yet'.

Hamas had not confirmed Sinwar's death at time of publication.

Sinwar - who Israel claims was the mastermind behind the October 7 attacks - replaced Ismail Haniyeh after the former leader of the Hamas Political Bureau was assassinated in Tehran in August.

President Joe Biden said the reported death of Sinwar was a 'good day for Israel, the US and the world'.

The Israel-Hamas war has continued for over a year, starting with the militant group's unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

In the enclave, the IDF launched a large-scale campaign of airstrikes and ground incursions, killing over 42,000 and injuring at least 99,000 according to the Palestinian side.
