Following Sunday's federal election the conservative Christian Democratic Union / Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) won 196 out of 735 seats in the Budestag (German Parliament) and a 24.1 percent vote share, losing out to the centre-left Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) who won the most seats (206) and 25.7 percent of the vote share.
The CDU intend to enter discussions with the FDP and The Greens with a negotiating team of ten. The team includes Paul Ziemiak, the party leader and Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet and other senior party officials.
The CDU are not the only party intending to explore possibilities with FDP and The Greens as Olaf Scholz expressed desire to form a coalition with the two parties on Monday.
Potential governing coalitions include the 'Jamaica' and the 'traffic light' coalitions. A 'Jamaica' coalition would be comprised of a Green Party, CDU/CSU and FDP governing majority, whereas the 'traffic light' coalition would be a Green Party, SPD and FDP majority.
