Description

A powerful typhoon lashed the northernmost islands of the Philippines, resulting in the evacuation of villagers and the shutdown of schools and inter-island ferries.

Footage captured in Batanes on Monday shows the devastating impact of Typhoon Krathon, with strong winds leading trees to sway violently and rain pouring down heavily.

Typhoon Krathon, locally known as Typhoon Julian, formed in the Philippine Sea last Thursday and started impacting the region over the last weekend.

With winds reaching up to 175 kph and gusts up to 215 kph, the Philippine Meteorological Agency released alerts regarding life-threatening storm surges and substantial wind damage.

Officials reported power cuts and communication failures in affected regions while pre-emptive evacuations were carried out as precautionary measures to ensure the residents' safety.

As a result, communities in Batanes and the Babuyan Islands were put on high alert, with predictions of more than 200 mm of rainfall in some regions. The storm, moving toward the west, is now expected to hit Taiwan.
