Joe Biden called for unity during his inauguration speech after taking his oath as the 46th President of the United States at the US Capitol Building in Washington DC on Wednesday.
During his speech, Biden pledged to be a "president for all Americans" and called for unity amongst citizens of the United States: "we must end this uncivil war that pits red against blue, rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal."
Biden also referred to the last weeks and months of Donald Trump's presidency as 'a painful lesson,' further adding: "there is truth and there are lies. Lies told for power and for profit."
The former president Donald Trump was impeached a week ago by the House of Representatives on the grounds of inciting violence before the storming of the US Capitol Building as he made claims that the election had been fraudulent. Trump became the first ever US president to have become impeached twice.
The storming, which took place on January 6, resulted in the death of five people after supporters of the former president rallied to disrupt the counting of electoral votes which confirmed Biden's victory.
