Description

Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny's lawyer said her client's actions in court will be studied, Moscow, Saturday, after he was found guilty of libeling a World War II veteran.

"She [the judge] said that to the Investigative Committee in order to check articles 144-145 of the Criminal Procedure Code, in order to check whether there are signs of a criminal case, they will [send] the record of the court session and the materials of the case. In order to decide whether to open a criminal case or not," Navalny's lawyer Olga Mikhailova said following the hearing.

She then confirmed they are about to file an appeal as soon as they get all the necessary papers from the court. Mikhailova also said that the prosecution's expert testimony was distorted. "She said that there are no facts in Navalny's statement, but there are personal judgments, and today in the verdict that we heard, her words sounded differently," Mikhailova highlighted.

On the other hand, prosecution claimed Navalny has had 'a direct intent' to libel the WWII vet Ignat Artyomenko. "Alexei Anatolyevich Navalny intentionally discredits the victory of our great country in, respectively, the Great Patriotic War, undermines the fundamental principles of our multinational Motherland," prosecutor Ekaterina Frolova concluded.

The anti-corruption activist was fined 850,000 roubles (€9,474; $11,482) for slandering Artemenko, who spoke in favour of amendments to Russia's constitution in last year's video alongside other Russian public figures. Navalny criticised the video on his personal Twitter and Telegram accounts.

Earlier this day, the Kremlin critic was partially denied an appeal in a separate case. His lawyers say he will stay behind bars till summer 2023.
