Venezuela declared European Union' Ambassador Isabel Brilhante Pedrosa 'persona non grata', Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza announced at a press conference in Caracas on Wednesday.

Brilhante has been given 72 hours to leave the Venezuelan territory. The move comes after the EU announced new sanctions against 19 Venezuelan officials.

"By the decision of President Nicolas Maduro, we have delivered into the hands of Mrs Isabel Brilhante, who in recent years was the head of the European Union delegation in Venezuela, the declaration as persona non grata," Arreaza said, adding that "we are doing so because the circumstances demand it".

Among those sanctioned by the EU are officials from the electoral body, the security forces, the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) and the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB).
