UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for an immediate stop to the fighting between Israel and Palestinian groups, speaking at the General Assembly in New York City on Thursday.

"Israel, with its state-of-the-art arms, is targeting families as they sleep to sow the seeds of terror among our people. It is not pretending it was a mistake. It is not even apologising. It is rather reaffirming that it is it's right to commit these crimes to kill innocent people, and it is burdening the victims with the responsibility," said Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki.

Israeli ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan walked out of the conference during al-Maliki's.

Speaking later at the meeting Erdan said "Hamas is an internationally-designated jihadi terrorist organisation that has fired more than 4,000 rockets at Israeli cities over the last 11 days. Right now as I speak to you, Israeli civilians are running to find shelter from Hamas's indiscriminate attacks."

More than 220 Palestinians and 12 Israelis were killed since the fighting began on May 10.
