The SPD's result fell flat, with the party coming third as the Greens ate into its share of the vote.
"I didn’t sleep well but I am sure a lot of Social Democrats did not either. I have just talked about a turning point and it feels exactly like it," the SPD's leader Andrea Nahles said.
The SPD won 16 seats in the EU elections with around 15.8 percent of the ballots cast on Sunday, coming in third place against Chancellor Angela Merkel's CDU/CSU coalition and the Green Party.
The result means the SPD lost some 11.5 percent of its vote share.
