Migrants taking shelter were observed camping in makeshift tents close to the border, as small children slept on the ground whilst others cooked rice. Colombian police officers patrolling the border on foot and on horses could also be seen.
"If you see here, these are the conditions that we all have. We ourselves have to help each other to clean, we have sick children and somehow we have to seek a solution," pointed out Pedro Ardila, one of the stranded migrants.
According to reports, thousands of Venezuelans were trapped at the border in Colombia, following the government announcement to limit the number of people being allowed back in an attempt to prevent spread of coronavirus. The border crossing through the Simon Bolivar International bridge is only permitted on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to maximum of 300 people each day.
Colombia has reported over 43,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus, with 1,505 linked deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University data.
