Description

Dozens of people took to the streets of Srinagar, Kashmir region, on Monday night to hold a vigil in memory of Iranian late President Ibrahim Raisi and other Iranian officials, who died following a helicopter crash on Sunday.

Footage shows the event participants praying with banners and signs featuring the officials who died in the accident.

"The death of Iran’s president is a huge loss, and he was a great leader who spent his whole life maintaining peace and unity. Today is a big loss, and we commemorate this day as a black day. We also observe this day as a black day," said Yasir Hassan, one of the demonstrators.

The 63-year-old president, along with his Foreign Minister and others, was reported dead on Monday. Their US-made Bell 212 helicopter crashed in the mountains of northern Iran's East Azerbaijan province amid heavy fog on Sunday. They were returning from the inauguration of a dam on the border with Azerbaijan.

The aircraft was discovered by rescuers in the early hours of Monday.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled after 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani becomes acting foreign minister.

Global leaders, including those from Russia, India, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and other nations, have also extended their condolences. Raisi, a conservative cleric closely associated with Supreme Leader Khamenei, was elected in 2021.
