Description

Dozens of Palestinians and Israeli left-wing activists were seen clashing with Israeli military personnel on Friday during a protest against the plans to evict 28 Palestinian families outside the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood, East Jerusalem.

Israeli forces were seen knocking one protester with crutches to the ground before snatching a Palestinian flag from his hands.

Later, demonstrators were seen clinging onto one another on the floor to prevent police and military officers from removing them.

A small number of counter-protesters were also present at the scene.

"Each of these people from the right-wing group that supports Netanyahu came to all our demonstrations in the Balfour region, and here they come to sabotage us and disrupt our demonstrations because we are from the left," said Israeli protester Eyal Hareuveni.

The High Court of Justice (HCJ) has offered the 28 families living in Sheikh Jarrah a deal to allow them to remain in their homes for 15 years, during which they would be obliged to pay rent to the Israeli Nahalat Shimon organisation.

The residents have yet to accept the negotiation, maintaining that they have the right to ownership of the properties.
