Members of the public shared their reactions in Berlin on Sunday, as polls closed for the 2021 German federal election and the first exit polls were released.
According to the projected results, SPD is leading at 25.20 percent, with CDU/CSU at 24.60 percent and the Greens at 14.3o percent.
The FDP follows at 11.60 percent, with the AfD at 10.0 percent. Further behind lies The Left, with five percent of the vote.
"I had thought that the CDU/CSU would lose some votes, and SPD will move forward, but we'll see, but I'm relaxed," said one voter, Markus.
The election is to select new members of the Bundestag, Germany's Federal Parliament, which will then elect the new country's chancellor, with Angela Merkel stepping down after 16 years in office.
Polling stations in Germany were open at 08:00 local time and closed at 18:00. Millions had already cast their votes via post.
