Simone Biles, a four-time Olympic champion and huge Team USA star confirmed during a press conference on Tuesday with her team mates that her unprecedented decision to withdraw from the women's gymnastics was due to concerns over her mental health.

"Put mental health first because if you do not, then you are not going to enjoy your sports, and you are not going to succeed as much as you want to, so it is okay sometimes to even sit out the big competitions. To focus on yourself because it shows how strong of a competitor and person you really are, rather than just battle through it," said Simone Biles.

During the conference she delivered a dramatic speech about the mental health challenges of elite sport.

"I do not want to put anything out that people would not view as nice. So, I didn't want to go out here, in that series, in that chapter, on the note that we did, but it could be a turnaround for the better. We're just going to have to see," stated Biles.

Her team members, who went on to win silver despite the setback supported their team members decision and celebrating their own achievement. Biles aims to return for the all-round competition which takes place on Thursday.
