Hundreds of students gathered outside the medical college of Basra University on Wednesday, to protest against foreign intervention and the escalating conflict between Iran and the United States over the assassination of Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani in a US airstrike in Baghdad.

"Foreign intervention, the Iranian as well as the American, is the last thing we need, we don't need their trouble in our country. Yes we would like them to leave, and to stop them from intervening in the affairs of Iraq, we want to live a free life," Asala abdelaziz, a student protester said.

One of the protesters addressed students saying "the government and the parliament must not allow for Iraq to be turned into a battle field and to find solutions for internal and external problems without driving Iraq into economic and political disputes."

On January 3, Soleimani and the deputy leader of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Mohammed Ali Ebrahimi, also known as Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, were killed by a US airstrike near Baghdad's airport in Iraq.
