Thousands of protesters rallied outside the Hennepin County Government Center where the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is accused of killing George Floyd last May, is taking place, on Monday.
Jury selection was delayed while an appeal carries on over a possible restoration of a third-degree murder charge.
Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter for his actions leading to George Floyd’s death. He had originally also been charged with third-degree murder, but that charge has since been dismissed.
Demonstrators rallied with signs reading 'Black Lives Matter' and 'No justice, no peace.'
"George Floyd is the face of hundreds in the state of Minnesota in the last 20 years," said Toshira Garraway, founder of Families Supporting Families Against Police Violence founder.
"Don't tell me he was at the wrong place at the wrong time, because time and place never paid for sin. I said time and place never paid for sin. This seems to be the period in our life, where justice is always a part of our life sentences," stated poet Isaiah Furquan.
Protests are expected daily throughout the trial in Minneapolis, and massive security measures could be seen around the Hennepin County Government Center.
Derek Chauvin is accused of killing George Floyd by stepping down on his neck on May 25, 2020 in Minneapolis. The opening arguments are scheduled to start on March 29, while the jury selection begins today.
On May 25, 2020, Chauvin, who was then a police officer, was filmed kneeling on George Floyd's neck for several minutes in Minneapolis. Floyd's death sparked nation-wide protests denouncing a pattern of unarmed black men, women, and children being killed by police.
