Description

Neighbours of the Hanau shooter, who killed ten people on Wednesday, say they heard the shooter and members of his family say xenophobic statements against Turks, as police cordoned off the neighbourhood in Hanau on Friday.

Asked whether the family were known to have xenophobic views, a neighbour of the family stated that they were heard saying "All these foreigners belong out from here and things like that."

The neighbour described the family as "withdrawn" and "reclusive" but specified the mother was "sociable when she was still well, but the family had no contact. No-one greeted the young one [the attacker] here."

The father was seen wearing "combat uniform" by another neighbour.

Police cordoned off the area where the shooter's body was found hours after the attack and the car thought to have been used in the attacks was parked. The shooter killed his mother before committing suicide.

The 43-year-old German citizen from Hanau, reportedly identified as Tobias R., opened fire outside a shisha bar at Heumarkt district, driving off to a second location in Kesselstadt district, where he opened fire again.

The double shooting left at least 10 people dead, with five injured, before the suspect and his 72-year-old mother were found dead at his address in the early hours of Thursday morning.

German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer described the Hanau shooting as a "racially motivated terror attack" during a press conference in Berlin earlier on Friday.
