CDU and CSU reflected on the party relations on former Bavarian minister president Edmund Stoiber’s 80th birthday in Munich on Friday.

CDU chairman and chancellor candidate Armin Laschet emphasised the necessary cohesion that the parties need after their defeat in the federal election. "It would be a good virtue for today: loyalty and criticism inwardly and you have always lived this good virtue and always recommended it to us," he said.

Markus Soder also contemplated on the relationship between the sister parties, calling their dynamic ‘timelessly exciting’ and pointing out their differences. "We are always close in the family, but we are still not twins, if I may say that," he said at the celebration.

Stoiber underlined the importance of the two parties standing together, stating that only in alliance they can serve Germany.

Edmund Stoiber held the position of minister president of Bavaria between 1992 and 2007 and was the head of the CSU from 1999 to 2007. In 2002 he ran as a chancellor candidate for the CSU/CDU but lost against the SPD candidate Gerhard Schroder.
