Pope Francis met bishops, priests and other Christian clerics at the Syro-Catholic Cathedral of “Our Lady of Salvation” in Baghdad, Friday, in his first-ever papal visit to Iraq.
Before the meeting at the Cathedral, the pontiff was welcomed in a ceremony at the Presidential Palace, where he met Iraqi President Barham Salih after which he also held meetings with civil authorities and members of the Diplomatic Corps. After Baghdad, the Pope is expected to visit Najaf and the ancient city of Ur.
The Iraq tour is the first papal trip abroad in 15 months.
