Berlin welcomes the Syria ceasefire deal struck between Russia and Turkey, said a government spokesperson in the German capital on Wednesday.

Speaking at a weekly press conference, government spokesperson Steffen Seibert stated "From our point of view it is also important that in the written results of this meeting there is a clear positive reference to the constitutional committee in Syria which is due to convene in Geneva next week, which both presidents confirm. From our conviction this constitutional committee is the entry into the much-demanded political process which is of crucial importance for a peaceful future of Syria," adding that the German government has not yet concluded its evaluation of Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer's proposal to set up an international security zone in northern Syria.

Commenting on a possible Brexit deadline extension, Seibert pointed out that Germany will not stand in its way.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Adebahr voiced concern about the situation in Chile, offering condolences to the relatives of the recent victims of police brutality.
