Former president Evo Morales instituted the holiday in remembrance of the date he took office in his first term, on 22 January 2006.
During the event, Añez criticized Morales and his political allies, stating that during "the days of the greatest crisis that Bolivia experienced in its democratic era, there were acts that can only be described as terrorism."
Añez also promised that the upcoming presidential elections "will become the most open, best accompanied and most observed Bolivian electoral process in all our history."
The interim leader also discussed Venezuela, one of Bolivia's most important allies during the presidency of Evo Morales, saying that "if we have been able to free ourselves from a destiny like that of Venezuela, we can be sure that peace, freedom, and democracy have come to stay.”
Morales fled Bolivia to Mexico in November under pressure from the armed forces following unrest over the allegations of controversial presidential election results. After a few weeks in Mexico, he was granted asylum in Argentina.
