Description

Restoration works, supervised by UNESCO, continue in the city of Mosul with rebuilding the Immaculate Church that was largely destroyed in 2017, ahead of Pope Francis' visit expected next month.

Hosh al-Bieaa neighborhood was filmed on Wednesday with damaged and destroyed churches, people carrying out restoration works, and debris scattered around the area. Nevertheless, official of the Mosul Syriac Catholic Church, Raed Adel confirmed that preparations are underway for the historic visit of the Pope, who will be received in an 'atmosphere of joy.'

"Surely, March 3, 2021, will be a special day in the history of Mosul in particular and Iraq in general, since this city will host His Holiness the Pope, who is a man of peace," said Adel.

Earlier last month, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis is set to visit Iraq early in March, the trip being his first visit abroad in 15 months.

The Pope is expected to visit Baghdad and Mosul, where he will pray in Hosh al-Bieaa for the comfort of souls of war victims. After that, he will visit the Immaculate Church in Qaraqosh where he will recite the Angelus Prayers with the believers. Finally, the Pope will return to Erbil, where he will celebrate the Holy Mass at Franso Hariri stadium.

The visit will also include the ancient city of Ur, the birthplace of Prophet Abraham, as well as the Nineveh Plain, whose residents suffered horrible atrocities committed by ISIS.

According to media reports, government committees were formed in various governorates to follow up with the logistic preparations and visit ceremonies, as the Pope will be moving in a convertible vehicle through the country that has been suffering security instability for years.
