Residents of Tripoli launched fireworks into the air on Thursday to celebrate the announcement of the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) that its forces had retaken control of all administrative borders of Greater Tripoli from the Libyan National Army (LNA).
The GNA insist that they have had control of Tripoli for some days already, but now say they have also secured the Greater Tripoli region.
The LNA via its spokesperson confirmed the 'redeployment' of forces from Tripoli.
Libya has been torn by conflict since the ousting of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. More recently the country has been split into areas controlled by the GNA in Tripoli and the northwest, and territories held by eastern-based LNA in Benghazi, led by General Khalifa Haftar.
