Description

Less than 1,000 accommodations were available for refugees in Berlin, the city's senator for Integration, Labour and Social Affairs Elke Breitenbach told at a press conference in the German capital on Thursday.

According to Senator Breitenbach, reception centres were half inhabited by people who already have a permit to stay in the country, some of whom had even been assigned flats but continued to live in the refugee accommodation. Many were brought to Berlin during the Kabul Airlift.

"We were happy to be able to put people in modular shelters. We are currently in the process of doing that and we have almost all of those tempo homes back up by now or are in the process of ramping them up,"

Breitenbach said.

According to the district office for Refugee Affairs, there are currently 20,261 migrant shelters occupied in Berlin.
