Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud gave a pre-recorded speech at the UN General Assembly in New York City on Wednesday, where he said Saudi Arabia supports efforts to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
"The Kingdom stresses the importance of making the Middle East a region free of all weapons of mass destruction. We therefore support international efforts aimed at preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. We are very concerned that Iranian steps that go counter to its commitments, as well as daily declarations from Iran that its nuclear program is peaceful," he said.
The king also highlighted his country's right to self-defence in the region while working on developing relations with regional rival Iran.
"We hope that our preliminary talks with it will lead to concrete results to build trust and to pave the way to achieve the aspirations of our citizens in establishing a cooperative relationship based on a commitment to the principles and resolutions of international legitimacy, respect for sovereignty, and noninterference in internal affairs," King Salman added.
