Description

Clashes erupted between Israeli police forces and solidarity activists rallying outside the house of Jerusalem's mayor, Moshe Lion, showing support to the Palestinian families evicted from the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood, as seen in Jerusalem's Rehavia on Wednesday.

Activists condemned the eviction and subsequent demolition of the Salhiya family's home in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood.

Police officers were seen trying to forcibly disperse a crowd of about two dozen protesters with signs depicting images of the demolished home while chanting slogans. Six protesters were reportedly arrested.

Earlier this week, residents of the demolished building held a standoff with authorities who came to evict them. Police eventually backed off but returned on Wednesday at dawn.

Nearly 300 Palestinians in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood are facing eviction after Israeli courts rejected their claims to be allowed to stay in homes where they have lived for decades.
