Description

New Yorkers held a solidarity march to Manhattan on Wednesday to commemorate the 47th birthday of the late George Floyd whose death at the hands of police in May sparked ongoing protests against police brutality.

Supporters and activists from the Black Lives Matter movement could be seen marching across the Brooklyn Bridge singing "Happy Birthday to you" and chanting slogans.

Similar demonstrations took place across the US as activists sought to honour Floyd, with vigils, sit-ins, marches, and other events being held to mark the occasion.

Floyd, a 46-year-old African American man, was killed during an arrest in Minneapolis on May 25. The four officers involved in the incident were dismissed, with officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on Floyd's neck, being charged with second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, with the other three being charged with aiding and abetting. Chauvin's attorneys have filed for dismissal, saying Floyd's death was most likely the result of drug use and pre-existing medical conditions. Chauvin was released on a $1 million (€848,000) bond on October 7, pending trial.
