02:37Prominent pro-democracy activists including media tycoon Jimmy Lai were sentenced by a Hong Kong court on Friday for their roles in the 2019 anti-government protests.
The court sentenced Mr Lai along several other top activists to 14 months in prison for unauthorised assembly in two demonstrations on August 18 and August 31 2019.
Protesters could be seen gathering outside the court while pro-democracy advocates spoke to the press. The ambassadors from Canada, Australia, Holland, Sweden, and France were also seen queuing outside the courthouse.
"I'm ready to face the penalty, the sentencing, and I'm proud that I can walk with the people of Hong Kong in this rally for democracy," campaigner Lee Cheuk-yan told the press.
Veteran activist Martin Lee, 82, whose sentence was suspended, could also be seen outside the court.
