Description

Crowds of protesters were seen marching in the Sheikh Jarrah area in East Jerusalem on Friday to show solidarity with their neighbourhood as well as Palestinian families facing evictions in Silwan.

Protesters marched and chanted as they rallied in front of Israeli forces. Amongst the protesters was a member of the Knesset Ahmed Al-Tibi who said that the eviction was "a political decision", and not a property issue.

"The international community should intervene, should stop the Israeli government and the authority from the eviction of these Palestinian families who are suffering from these soldiers here who are attacking young Palestinian protesters and attacking all Palestinian families. We are here to say stop eviction of Sheikh Jarrah," he added.

Silwan is another neighbourhood in East Jerusalem were Palestinian families face potential evictions. An Israeli court delayed the final order for the evictions until August 7th.

The postponed decision comes as both Palestine and Israel reached an Egyptian-mediated ceasefire on May 20, bringing to an end the worst outbreak of violence since 2014 that left 12 Israelis and 248 Palestinians dead after 11 days of hostilities.
