White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki slammed what she described as former US President Donald Trump's 'reckless' pullout from the Iran nuclear deal, during a press briefing in Washington DC on Wednesday.

"Most importantly none of the things we’re looking at now - Iran’s increased capability and capacity, their aggressive actions that they’ve taken through proxy wars around the world - would be happening if the former president had not recklessly pulled out of the nuclear deal with no thought as to what might come next," said Psaki.

She added that "Iran’s nuclear programme was no longer in a box, it no longer had the most robust inspection regime ever negotiated, no longer had the tight restrictions on nuclear activity."

Negotiations to salvage the Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) which the Trump administration left in 2018, resumed in late November.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh recently said that Tehran expects a "responsible, complete and verifiable return to the JCPOA" by the US.
