Leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn was accosted by an activist dressed as Elmo from Sesame Street as he made his way to vote at a polling station in his constituency, the London Borough of Islington, on Thursday morning.
Corby urged calm, saying "Hello guys, can we stop the arguments please." A man next to Elmo held a sign reading "Bobby Smith, Give me back Elmo. Stop emotional child abuse vote Elmo; #VoteElmo." The banner was in reference to a Fathers 4 Justice activist who climbed on to the roof of Buckingham Palace in 2016.
Police were later seen escorting Elmo from the polling station grounds.
Polling stations opened at 0700 GMT in 650 constituencies across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Official results are expected to start coming in after polls close at 2200 GMT. This is the third UK general election in less than five years.
