Some 180 migrants, including women and children, disembarked at the Sicilian port of Messina, on Friday, after being rescued in international waters by humanitarian organisations.
"The disembarkation operations of these 180 migrants are underway, about 40 are minors," said Patrizia Adorno, the sub-prefect of Messina who was at the scene.
Upon arrival, migrants were expected to follow security measures, including being photographed, being swabbed for COVID-19 and interviewed by police.
According to the Italian interior ministry, 59,702 refugees have disembarked in Italy this year.
