Description

Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn told protesters at a 'No War with Iran' rally in London on Saturday that Iran's alleged accidental shooting down of a passenger plane was an "appalling act" that could have "no excuse."

Corbyn said the tragedy was "part of a whole pattern of appalling acts all across the region," while speaking to protesters in London's Trafalgar Square.

Corbyn also told protesters that "there's no excuse for a targeted assassination by one state against another."

Tensions between the US and Iran soared following the killing of Iranian Quds Force General Qassem Soleimani. Soleimani and deputy leader of Iraq's Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) Mohammed Ali Ebrahimi, also known as Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, were killed by a US drone strike near Baghdad's airport last week, triggering an escalation of tensions in the region.

Earlier on Saturday, Iran's military admitted "unintentionally" shooting down the Ukrainian International Airlines (UIA) flight PS752, killing all 176 people on board, on Wednesday. According to IRGC Aerospace Force Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, the Iranian air defence systems erroneously identified the passenger jet "as a cruise missile."
