Kramp-Karrenbauer also said that the election was lost among young people, who the party failed to appeal to, and a perceived shift towards the right.
The CDU and its ally CSU came first in Germany's EU elections with around 28 percent of the vote, which is down some seven points on the previous campaign in 2014.
