The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is following the security situation in Jerusalem with "deep concern," UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters in New York City on Monday.

"I can tell you that the Secretary-General is following with deep concern the latest security developments which risk triggering yet another dangerous escalation leading to further violence and loss of lives," Dujarric said, condemning the rocket launch into Israel allegedly done by Hamas as well as the Israeli policy and eviction of Palestinian families from East Jerusalem neighbourhoods.

"Israeli authorities must exercise maximum restraint and respect the right to freedom of peaceful assembly. All leaders have a responsibility to act against extremists and to speak out against all acts of violence and incitement," Dujarric concluded.
