Description

Demonstrators gathered in front of the Brandenburg Gate in solidarity with Israel and in opposition to antisemitism, in Berlin on Thursday evening.

The demonstration was a coordinated effort from multiple groups including the Jewish Community of Berlin.

Demonstrators showed solidarity waving the flags of Israel and Iraqi Kurdistan and displaying signs reading 'Free Gaza from Hamas' and 'Israel we stand with you.'

Organisers invited speakers from every major political party, explicitly excluding the Alternative for Germany (AfD) from participating via social media.

Top German politicians including Vice-Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Berlin Mayor Michael Muller and Health Minister Jens Spahn attended the event.

This demonstration was in response to recent escalating violence between Israel and Palestine and comes amid several recent incidents of antisemitism in Germany.

Hostilities in the Middle East have spilled over to Germany in recent weeks with some participants displaying reported anti-Semitic behaviour at several pro-Palestine demonstrations.

There have also been several incidents of attacks on synagogues in Germany in recent days, with a synagogue memorial stone in Berlin having been vandalised earlier this week.

German Interior Ministry spokesperson Dr Marek Wede reiterated earlier in the week that Germany absolutely "will not tolerate the burning of Israeli flags and attacks on Jewish institutions on German soil."

He threatened those who 'spread antisemitism' with legal consequences, declaring "Jews must never again live in fear in Germany."
