EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell expressed hopes that Russia won't intervene in Belarusian affairs in a press conference with German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas on the second day of the Gymnich Meeting in Berlin on Friday.
"Belarus should not be a second Ukraine. The Belarusian people are not discussing about to whom they want to be closer, Russia or the EU. This is not the issue. The issue is about democracy, freedom, human rights inside Belarus," Borrell said.
"If Russia believes in the independency and sovereignty of the nation state, they will respect the wishes and (democratic) choices of the Belarusian people. I think that's what Russia says, also Putin said, that by the time being he doesn't consider necessary any kind of intervention and I hope this is what's going to happen," Borrell added.
