Description

The forces of the Government of National Accord (GNA) retook control of Tripoli International Airport from the Libyan National Army (LNA), as footage taken on Wednesday shows and as it was reported by local media affiliated with the GNA.

The footage shows a number of armed individuals on the runway of the airport preparing mortar shells, heavy weapons, and different military equipment. There is a heavy presence of armed vehicles with people firing shots in celebration. Damage on the entrance of the airport and on one of the airport's buildings is also visible.

Following the overthrow of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, the country split into areas controlled by the GNA in Tripoli and northwest, and lands controlled by the LNA in Benghazi led by General Khalifa Haftar.
