Description

Hundreds of protesters gathering in Cologne on Friday, to hold a demonstration against racism and intolerance in the wake of the deadly shootings in Hanau.

Protesters can be seen with flags, banners, and placards, which said "Racism kills" or "Stop right-wing terror."

Mayor of Cologne Henriette Reker, herself a victim of a right-wing attack when she was stabbed in the neck over her support for refugees in 2015, was present at the rally and spoke to the crowd.

"This horrible act did more than just destroy 11 lives, destroy 11 families, it has made a decisive cut through our society," she said.

A gunman opened fire outside one shisha bar in the city's Heumarkt district and drove off to a second location in the Kesselstadt district where he opened fire again, killing nine people in total and injuring several others late on Wednesday evening.

The suspect was a 43-year-old German citizen from Hanau. Together with his 72-year-old mother, he was found dead at his home in the early hours of Thursday morning.

German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer described the Hanau shooting as a "racially motivated terror attack" during a press conference in Berlin earlier on Friday.
