Description

The streets of Tobita Shinchi in Osaka, known as one of the largest quarters of licensed brothels in Japan dating back to 1912 wore a deserted look on Friday as the red-light district shut up shop on day one of the city hosting the currently-underway G20 summit.

The area was seen lit with lanterns but devoid of any customers as reportedly all 159 members of the Tobita Shinchi association closed the red-light district for business in a bid towards making Osaka "a place for everyone in the world to enjoy together" according to Mr. Tokuyama, Chief of the Tobita Shinchi Area Association who added that this move would help the summit "go more smoothly."

The area is closed for business reportedly for the first time since 1989, when it closed for a period as a mark of respect for the funeral of Emperor Showa.

The G20 summit is being held in Osaka, Japan on 28 and 29 June.
