Description

A judge at Moscow’s Babushkinskiy District Court ordered the removal from the courtroom of Alexei Navalny following an outburst by the opposition figure during a defamation case concerning WWII veteran Ignat Artemenko, on Friday.

Navalny is seen apparently interrupting, and talking in a loud voice to the plaintiff. The jailed opposition figure was also seen addressing the court concerning alleged contradictions in statements made by the witness and the plaintiff. Navalny also purported that the grandson of the veteran was “selling his grandfather.” After these remarks the judge demanded the removal of Navalny from the court room.

During the trial, the judge twice remarked on Navalny’s behaviour concerning speech violations. The judge also rejected several of Navalny’s questions to witnesses, which were considered irrelevant to the merits of the case.

The opposition figure pointed out to the court that during the interrogation via videoconference the WWII veteran Ignat Artemenko read out his testimony and asked for the questioning to be ended.

"It is obvious that he has not written anything - neither a report nor his testimony. It is obvious that he doesn’t understand what is going on," said Navalny.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for February 12.

The anti-corruption activist Navalny is accused of libeling Artemenko, who spoke in favour of amendments to Russia’s constitution last year, on his personal Twitter and Telegram accounts.

If convicted, Navalny faces a fine of up to one million roubles ($13,335/€11,130) or corrective labour of up to 240 hours.

Alexei Navalny hasn’t plead guilty.

Navalny's lawyer Olga Mikhailova claimed that violations against the law were made during Friday’s court hearing.

"The situation was quite tense because in our opinion during this process, a huge number of violations were committed against penal law and criminal procedure, on the part of the judge and the prosecutor," she said.
